Accessibility statement

The new accessibility regulations mean public sector organisations have a legal duty to make sure websites meet accessibility requirements. We are committed to making our website accessible for all and aim to achieve the recommended government standard for web accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA).

As a user with accessible needs, you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader

We also aim to make the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We have identified the following features on our website which are not fully accessible:

  • PDF , Word  Excel and other documents may not be accessible to screen reader software
  • Areas of the site may be difficult to navigate using just a keyboard and screen reader software
  • The structure of pages including headings and other layout features may mean they are not  fully accessible to screen reader software
  • Some of our videos do not include transcripts or closed captions and/or may not be fully accessible to screen reader software
  • Alternative text is not always available on images and may be applied inconsistently  or incorrectly throughout the site
  • Some link text doesn’t make sense when read on its own for example, ‘see here’.  There are also empty links on this site
  • There are issues with text including low contrast between text and background,  very small text and justified text

Technical information about this website’s accessibility 

NHS North Kirklees CCG is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Disproportionate burden

Fixing documents

Many of our documents in formats such as PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint do not meet accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA). This includes our Governing Body and Primary Care Commissioning Committee documents. We have reviewed these documents and the costs of recreating them in an accessible format. We believe that doing so would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations.  This is based on the justification that the CCG is developing an entirely new website which will be in place by the end of 2020. The new site will be fully compliant with web accessibility requirements.

YouTube and other video clips

The CCG has developed a number of videos and some them are without captions or transcripts.  We are in the process of updating or removing these clips from our website.    Please see below for more information about how we plan to improve website accessibility.

Content that is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations 

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they are not essential to the organisation. However, we recognise that these may include a number of  documents that are essential to the organisation. In these cases we are asking individuals to email us at nkccg.nkghcomms@nhs.net  if they require a document in an alternative format.

What we’re doing to improve our accessibility

The CCG is developing a new website which should be in place by the end of 2020.   We had planned to publish this new website earlier in the year, however the coronavirus pandemic meant that other work was prioritised and the completion date was changed.

The new site will be fully compliant with web accessibility requirements.  The steps we are taking to ensure we meet these requirements include:

  • Developing accessibility guidance for web editors and providing training
  • Using accessible templates to ensure PDF and other documents are compliant from the point of creation
  • Reviewing all existing documents to be published on the new site and setting out a plan for fixing or dealing with those which fall into the scope of the current regulations
  • Ensuing that all images include appropriate alternative text and are suitable in their context
  • Ensuring that video content is accessible
  • Carrying out an annual audit of the public facing CCG website to make sure we are complying with the new regulations to the best of our ability.

 Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 22 September 2020. It was last reviewed and updated on 28 October 2020.

This website was subject to a basic accessibility check, which was carried out in-house,  as set out by the Government Digital Service on their website .   The CCG has not carried out a detailed audit of this site because it is due to be replaced by an entirely new site by the end of 2020.
