One You campaign helps adults get healthy for later life

This week sees the launch of a ground-breaking campaign by Public Health England to help adults across the country avoid future illness caused by our lifestyles.

The campaign supported by Kirklees Council and called ‘One You’, will help adults move more, eat well, drink less alcohol and be smoke free. It also provides information on how people can reduce their stress levels and sleep better.

Habits and lifestyle choices such eating too much unhealthy food, drinking more alcohol than is recommended, continuing to smoke and not being active enough cause around 40% of all deaths in England, and cost the NHS more than £11 billion each year.

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Public Health, said “many of the health related problems that people experience in later life are not due to ageing but the loss of fitness and preventable ill health.

“We are putting our support behind One You to help everyone in Kirklees to start thinking about their health and to make small changes that will lead to a better quality of life now and in later years. We want everyone to enjoy rather than endure older age – especially as the people live longer now than every before.

“One You is not just about information, it’s about making healthy lifestyle change easier, more desirable and more achievable for everyone – because there is only one you. Why not have a go at the quiz and see how you do” .

One You provides practical ways to reappraise your lifestyle in the form of a new online quiz called ‘How Are You?’ This free quiz shows people which areas they should look to change and provides encouragement and tools to do so.
